Why Does Erectile Dysfunction Happen? Know It All

Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile Dysfunction is a condition in which the person is not able to keep a firm erection during sex. This problem is quite common and 1/10 of men might have to go through this during their life. Erectile Dysfunction is not a standalone problem as it arises due to other underlying reasons which many men don't realize. This affects sexual life and ultimately the relationship with the partner.

Symptoms

There can be certain symptoms that indicate the presence of ED:

  • Erection comes only sometimes and not every time you wish to engage in sex.
  • Having an erection that doesn't last long.
  • Not getting an erection at any time.

If the rate of getting an erection is below 20%, it's not a problem, and no treatment is required for the same. But if this rate is above 50%, it means there's an issue and further treatment or help needs to be taken from a professional.

Causes of ED

There are multiple factors responsible for this issue which are listed below:

  • Vascular Disease: Vascular Disease such as atherosclerosis hardens the arteries as a result of which the pathway to the penis for blood supply can be blocked or even narrowed. Less blood supply to the penis can result in no erection as proper supply is essential to get an erection.
  • Neurological Issue: The nerves responsible for sending impulses to the penis can be damaged by diabetes, stroke, or any other cause due to neurological diseases like multiple sclerosis.
  • Certain Medicines: Many medicines also can give rise to ED as their side effect. The medicines for blood pressure, depression, any kind of tranquilizer, appetite suppressant, ulcers, antiandrogens, etc. can give ED as a side effect. Antihypertensives, antihistamines, antiarrhythmics, diuretics, etc also have ED as a potential side effect. In this case, do not stop taking medicines, rather consult the doctor and ask for alternatives for the same.
  • Bad/Unhealthy Habits: Habits that affect health like drinking, smoking, using drugs, etc are also contributing factors to ED. Lack of exercise and being overweight also account for ED.
  • Try to quit these habits and take up a healthy lifestyle. Workout at least 3 to 5 days a week. Adapting to a healthy lifestyle is a solution to many issues with one being a happy and healthy sexual life.
  • Underlying Medical Issues: Many times it's the underlying medical issues that give rise to ED. Diabetes (type 2) and kidney diseases are also responsible for ED. Any injury in the pelvis, bladder, prostate, spinal cord or penis can be a cause of ED. Injury caused due to treatment for radiation therapy, prostate surgery, medication for prostate cancer, etc.
  • Psychological Issues: Bad mental health and psychological issues like anxiety and depression can be major contributing factors in ED. Also, further worrying about sexual failure or guilt regarding sexual performance can worsen this condition even more. Seek help from a mental health expert if the issue is worse and try yoga and meditation on your end to stay calm. Today's lifestyle often gives rise to stress and anxiety which worsens physical health as well.

ED is not age specific as it can happen to a person at any age. Although the chances of developing ED increase with age, aging is not a factor behind ED. Whatever may be the age, the person suffering from ED should seek medical help as there's no age bar to treat it. As soon as you start noticing the symptoms so that sexual life is less impacted. Getting help from a medical professional can treat ED timely, and properly and won't strain the relationship with your partner.
