Joint Pain In Knees

Knee pain is a very common condition that occurs in elderly and middle-aged people. Many times it affects young children as well. Sore knees are not much of an issue as it's quite common. However, there are certain cases where the knee pain is accompanied by other symptoms as well that might indicate something serious. The primary reasons for joint pain in the knees are lack of exercise, lack of proper nutrition, sitting in a particular posture for long hours, etc. People who are into sports are also prone to knee pain depending on the nature of their sport.

Symptoms

The severity and location of the pain can be different depending on the cause of the issue. You might experience other symptoms in addition to knee pain as well like:

  • Instability or weakness
  • Crunching or popping noises
  • Stiffness and swelling
  • Warmth and redness on touching
  • Not being able to keep the knee straight

Causes

Let's have a detailed insight below on what can be the causes of knee pain:

Injury: Many people face knee pain who have got an injury ever in their life on or around their knees. The injury may harm any tendon, ligament, or bursae that are sacs of fluid present around the knee. The ligament of the knee can get strained or sprained by any sudden twist/blow. The person might find it difficult to walk due to swelling and pain. The connective tissue known as menisci which is responsible for enhancing stability and absorbing shocks can get torn. Tears often occur due to sprains as well.

Tendonitis: Tendons might face inflammation when it gets overused due to activities like cycling, jumping, running, etc. This condition is also termed jumper's knee/Tendonitis and is quite common in players who play basketball as their tendons are prone to this as they get strained due to the force after hitting the ground.

Osteoarthritis: Osteoarthritis is a very common condition/type of arthritis that occurs in elderly people. In this condition, the cartilage around and in joints wears away. Often found in elder and middle-aged persons as well, it even starts affecting routine activities if it gets severe and makes life quite difficult for the people affected. Repeated injury or being overweight increases the stress on the joint and damages it. This is one of the main reasons why overweight people are more prone to osteoarthritis.

Rheumatoid Arthritis: A condition called rheumatoid arthritis is also responsible for affecting the knees. In this, the inflammation occurs in joints and the knee cartilage gets destroyed. Though this type of arthritis actually affects people earlier than osteoarthritis and is found in young people.

Osgood-Schlatter's Disease: Often found in young people and children, swelling occurs in the lump present below the knee cap. It gets swollen after as well as during exercise too.

Patellofemoral Syndrome: A very common problem usually affecting young people and children, this condition causes pain around or behind the kneecap. And the feeling or sensation of pain is felt while cycling, squatting, running, going upstairs, etc.

Knee pain often goes away without any medical assistance. If you experience certain symptoms repeatedly like extreme pain, difficulty in movement, hindrance in routine activities, swelling, obstruction in movement of joints, any kind of deformity it's better to seek medical help timely so as to avoid further damage to the knees. Also, if you feel you can't withstand the weight on your knees or your knees give up when you try to put pressure or weight on your knees. The medical experts will suggest treatment after diagnosing the condition and its severity.
